The science of chiropractic care revolves around how the alignment of your spine affects the rest of your body and overall health. Before you were even born, your central nervous system (consisting of your brain, your spinal cord and all of the nerves that travel out from between the vertebrae to the rest of your body) has controlled how your body functions. When the vertebrae in your spine are correctly aligned, the brain can send and receive messages through all of the nerves to direct your body without interference.
Unfortunately, stress happens every day that can negatively affect the curvature of your spine: car accident injuries, sports injuries, slouching at your desk, the physical demands of pregnancy, sleeping on the wrong mattress, and much more. We call them the 3 T’s of stress (thoughts, traumas and toxins.) When the spine is misaligned, even just slightly, nerves get pinched and the messages that are supposed to travel back and forth are stymied, resulting in a subluxation. If subluxations are not corrected, they can worsen and symptoms such as back problems, neck pain and other issues can result.
“Vital information travels from the brain and spinal cord to all of the parts of the body. But, not only does information travel down the nerve, but at the same time information from the peripheral parts of the body is being sent back to the brain and spinal cord. When this information is interfered with, a problem arises in the body.”
–Daniel J. Murphy, DC; Spinal Biomechanics, Harrison, 1992, p.366
Many people first discover chiropractic when seeking back pain relief; but we can do much more. While adjustments provide pain relief and help your body start to heal itself naturally, what we really love to do is help people avoid pain and injury before it occurs. Small subluxations can start misdirecting nervous system messages long before you start experiencing back problems, sciatica, headaches, and fatigue.
We can catch problems before you start to feel painful symptoms. The earlier we catch a problem through gentle spinal adjustments and other natural treatments, the easier it is to correct.
